Food Truck Friday: Carnivore BBQ

I’m reinstating the Food Truck Friday tradition on this blog after a brief hiatus when I was visiting home in D.C. and then getting back into the swing of school again!

I’ve been dying to try Carnivore BBQ ever since I had of a bite of it when my friend ordered it. I haven’t been able to do a Food Truck Friday post in awhile so I decided this Friday I had to do it & I knew immediately which food truck I’d be making a beeline to: Carnivore BBQ.

I had decided I’d want to get the pulled pork sandwich, a “Carnivore’s Delight” according to their menu. The pulled pork sandwich is more than 1/2 lb of pulled pork with North Carolina style slaw (vinegar based, no mayo) served on an artisan roll.

Their homemade BBQ sauces are:

– Memphis: tomato based, rich, sweet, smokey with a slight kick.

– Mustard: the hot (XXX) BBQ sauce

– South Carolina: vinegar based, tart, a bit sweet and touch of heat

I was in line (which was long but went by quickly), trying to decide to decide which sauce to get, when they asked to take my order. I explained to them I wanted the pulled pork but couldn’t decide which sauce to get: the Mustard or the Memphis. The guy was really nice and asked me if I liked spicy food to which I enthusiastically responded, “YES!”

He directed me to ask for the habanero-jalapeno sauce and if I wanted to temper the heat, mix it with the Memphis. I was sold.

I placed my order and the pitmaster convinced me to add a dash of the Mustard sauce as well, saying “That’s my own sandwich order!” With that kind of endorsement, who was I to say no? I paid the $8 for my massive amount of food and left. I wasn’t able to eat a lot of it because I had pilates in an hour and didn’t want to exercise on a full stomach. However, now that I’m done with pilates (what a work out!), I was able to enjoy my meal.

It definitely was packing some heat but the Memphis sauce was the perfect way to temper the heat and still bring out the rich flavor. The pork was extremely moist and absolutely phenomenal. The coleslaw was sweet with its Carolina vinegar based sauce. I took a bite of pork with just the Mustard sauce and oh my goodness was it spicy! But delicious, I’d definitely go back again!

You get a ton of food for $8 with the pulled pork sandwich.

– Beef Brisket ($9): 1/2 of brisket on a baker’s roll with slaw & homemade BBQ sauce.

– The Combo ($10): beef & pork sandwich with slaw

So much food for $8!
