Chai Oatmeal Latte

Chai oatmeal latte is pretty much a hug in a mug. I originally heard about the idea of an “oatmeal latte” from a Real Simple post and was intrigued since I’ve recently gotten really into oatmeal for breakfast.Rolled oats are a pantry staple for me because I love overnight oats for a grab ‘n go breakfast. Trader Joe’s sells a big bag of rolled oats $4 and it’s gluten-free for any of you who can’t (or don’t) have gluten in your diet. I highly recommend you grab a bag on your next visit to Trader Joe’s, rolled oats are a “stick to your ribs” breakfast food. But RS used espresso and once again I thought that coffee drinkers have all the fun.

With the cooler temps, I’ve started switching back to hot chai lattes (Au revoir, iced chai) and usually have one in the morning when the office is still a little chilly. I remembered the Real Simple oatmeal latte and thought I’d give it a whirl with chai, kitchen experiment style. Trader Joe’s Chai mix is another favorite of mine. Instead of spending $5 on a single chai latte from Starbucks, I get a week’s worth of chais with the TJ’s mix. Winner winner.

My little kitchen science experiment paid off and guys, chai oatmeal lattes are delicious. Topped with frothy milk (I used almond) and a dash of cinnamon and you are going to win at breakfast, let me tell you.

And to quote Leslie Knope, “Why would anybody ever eat anything besides breakfast food?”

Recipe type: Breakfast
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: 1 latte

Ingredients
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups milk (I used almond)
  • 1 scoop of Trader Joe's Chai mix
Frothed Milk
  • ¼ cup milk
  • Dash of cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Add the rolled oats, milk and chai mix into a saucepan and stir to combine.
  2. Cook over medium heat for about 10-12 minutes or until oats are soft, be sure to stir often to prevent the milk from burning.
  3. If you're feeling fancy, you can top with frothed milk and a dash of cinnamon. I frothed the milk using a French press. Heat the ¼ cup of milk up in a microwave for about 20 seconds and then pour into the French press. Slowly pump until milk becomes frothy and doubles in size.
  4. Pour over the chai oatmeal latte and top with dash of cinnamon.
