hometown tour

Yesterday, you saw my {impromptu photoshoot} at an old train depot in my village. Today, I am going to introduce you to my little neck of the woods: Orchard Park, New York.

I get a teensy bit annoyed when people saw that all of New York State is merely an extension of the city. Incredibly far from the truth. While New York is the greatest city in the world and an incredible skyline, I’d say upstate has its own breath taking views : )

And of course, my personal favorite…my home!

My house

For a history geek such as myself, my neighborhood is absolutely chock full of it. From American Revolution patriots to the Underground Railroad, Orchard Park played a special role in history. Not to mention those homes are gorgeous!

Besides the history, I think I appreciate the beauty of nature in this little village. My mini vacation was a perfect escape.

{Gallery Wall Brainstorm}

Lately, my studio decor projects have been taking a backseat priority-wise. I know I want to tackle my gallery wall next to my dining table and I have a grand vision of how beautiful and {Pinterest}-worthy it will hopefully be. However, a couple of roadblocks: the idea of hammering into my wall gives me anxiety over whether the pictures will be level and the lack of time to hunt for gallery wall photos. So as a result, my lovely pictures and frames are patiently leaning against my wall and in fact, staring at me as I type this post.

On my way home last night, I brainstormed possible gallery wall additions, obviously with a budget in mind. I realized the answer was right in front of me: greeting cards!

I know snail mail is a rarity but I love opening my mail box and seeing something other than a bill or a takeout menu. I love to pick out cards and peruse the clever sayings and beautiful images…so why not use them as decor?

My favorite card brand is {Rifle Paper Co.} because they are whimsically chic. Remember my motivational {zebra to do notepad}? Yup, the genius of Rifle was behind that design!

After much thought as to my {cottage glam} decor, I am opting for these cards:

Rifle Paper Cards

Peonies | Pearl | Bees | Wellies

The peonies and wellies both remind of a garden and I can just picture the wellies lined up outside a cottage door next to a garden full of peonies. Plus, peonies are one of my favorite flowers! The hunter green of the wellies matches nicely with the peony leaves and green accents on my couch pillows.

I used to be a solidly silver girl but now I catch myself favoring gold. {I love gold as an accent color} and think the bees and oyster’s golden hues add a real pop to the otherwise natural color scheme. And could I really not have pearls featured in my decor? : )

Have you created a gallery wall? Any tips or thoughts are very much welcome! Tweet, comment or email dcgirlinpearls (at) gmail (dot) com.

Can’t wait to show you my wall when it’s completed!

{Tulips}

The weather says freezing, but my heart says spring.

I have been mooning over spring weather, styles, meals, cocktails and just about anything related to the green season. Well, on Monday my spring fever reached a…ahem fever pitch.

On my weekly grocery shopping trip, I gave in to an impulse purchase:

But how could I resist? They had a wonderful fragrance and were the just the ticket to brighten up my dining table.

Remember my {celebration candlesticks}? I love having fresh flowers around the house to add color and spirit. I know I left my apartment Tuesday morning ready to go after catching a glimpse at my beautiful tulips!

Do you have a favorite spring bloom?

{Mirror, Mirror}

A common truth in home decor is “Mirrors give the illusion of space.” As I work with about 500 square feet in my studio, any space, even imaginary space, is welcome.

The wall behind my dining table contains 2 medium-large sized prints of cherry blossoms and I have been brainstorming to build a gallery wall so stayed tune for a post on that front! I think my gallery wall will have to include a mirror…or two.

Mirror Mirror

1 | 2| 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

The first and third mirrors, I would be apt to paint them a different color other than the black. Maybe a seafoam green…or a metallic gold? Oh, the possibilities!

Which mirror would you choose?

{Potted Plants}

A favorite spring tradition (and yes, we’re already moving on to spring) of mine is having fresh hyacinth in a vase on my bedside table. In my humble opinion, there is almost nothing better than waking up on cool cotton sheets with the aroma of hyacinth. Or lilacs, either is simply glorious.

I love plants but I am really not much of a gardener. Besides, I live in a city where I don’t have a garden, or a yard for that matter. But I digress.

To satisfy my desire for green in my studio, I have hardy plants that are stalwart enough to survive the entire year.

Potted Plants

Palm | Lucky Bamboo | Topiary | Fern

All of the above with the exception of the topiary are placed throughout my studio. The best part of these plants are that they add life, vibrance and color to my apartment decor and are very easy to maintain. I set reminders for myself on my iPhone when to water them (the lucky bamboo requires almost no water) and they are simple decor pieces. And during the winter when everything’s so gray and drab, you come home to marvelous shades of green!

{This Little Light Of Mine}

Growing up in a house with a fireman, candles were frowned upon in our establishment. Too bad my mother and I love them! Any time my mother would light a candle, my father would be there in a flash to “monitor the situation.”

But now, I have my own studio and had an epiphany: “I could have candles!”

Candles Post

Clockwise: White Flower | Gem Scroll | PeacockYellow Hyacinth

These are all contenders in my candle race. I love all the details from scalloped edges to luxurious peacock feathers!! Which candle would you pick? Combinations encouraged : )

{Celebration}

Last summer, my parents came down to DC to help move me into my studio. It was a great weekend and as we said goodbye, my mother told me my dad and her hid a surprise for me in my hall closet. The caveat? I could only open it when I became gainfully employed.

I am not the best at surprises because I want to know immediately what it is. Luckily, the “out of sight, out of mind” mentality held true and I forgot about the surprise in my closet until almost two weeks ago.

As soon as an email popped into my inbox formally offering me a position, my knees practically gave out and I floated to my hall closet. My hands were shaking, I was so excited! Fittingly, this coincided with my {5ooth} post on DC Girl in Pearls

Inside the package were two beautiful, exquisite candle holders.

How beautiful do they look next to the blue hydrangeas?

{Guide to Bar Cart Accessories}

I love entertaining and playing hostess although I’ll be honest, my schedule lately has put a bit of a stop on my social life. Hopefully, once I start my job my schedule will calm down and I could plan a cocktail party.

At the center of every cocktail party is the bar cart. In my studio, my bar cart is actually a wicker table.

IMG_1832

I decorated my bar table with a metal tray my mother found at an antique store as well as colorful straws, fun coasters, and silly napkins.

To decorate your own bar cart, let’s start with the basics first:

Bar Cart_Classics

A martini shaker is the centerpiece for a bar cart, {a reasonably priced shaker can be found at Target}. Most of my drinks on {Thirsty Thursday} require a shaker so I would highly recommend the purchase.

My mother found my tray at an antiques shop (another reason to love upstate New York, the antiques) so I was lucky in that find. However, there are {great trays on Etsy}. Mason jars are a cute touch to hold the flexible straws. Not in the picture above: I also have a mason jar holding wine corks!

Now, we’ve covered the basics and are ready to get colorful!

Bar Cart_Colors

Napkins: Who wants plain boring napkins? No one! I am partial to the {polka dots}, what about you?

Straws: I love these {striped paper straws} and they even come in red, perfect for a Valentine’s Day Party!

Lemonade: Of course, I have to throw in a Trader Joe’s product to this post. Trader Joe’s French Market Sparkling Lemonade is absolutely delicious and not to mention, a great mixer. The bottle itself is classic and looks great as an accessory.

Coasters: I am slightly obsessive about {coasters} and have a variety of colors. No glass touches any of my furniture without a coaster. Luckily, the coasters are so cute, no one minds my slightly OCD tendency!

Well there you go, a guide to decorate your own bar cart at home. A guide on how to stock it…that’ll be another day and another post : )

{Coffee Table Stacks}

We all love our arm stacks, mixing and matching and arranging bangles to coordinate our outfit. The pops of color and personality pull together an outfit. Well, the same is true of coffee table stacks.

While my studio does not have the room for a coffee table, I have stacks of books placed on my TV stand, bedside table and several shelves. Every so often, I like to rearrange the books, particularly on my bedside table. It’s amazing how a slight adjustment can transform the room and breathe new life into the decor.

Similar to the stacks, coffee table books are an excellent way to showcase your personality. I tend to favor books about style, politics and several treasured children’s books I’ve held onto since I was a child.

Coffee Table Books

Style: Take Ivy | True Prep | Vogue | Chanel

Inspire: Seven | Big Russ & Me | Celebrating You

Art: The Louvre | Andy Warhol | Monet’s Impressions

Whimsy: Eloise | Miss Rumphius

Do you have stacks of coffee table books, too? Which ones are your favorites?

{Gold & Coral}

Remember when the latest Barbie was the  gift under the Christmas tree you loved best? Sorry, Barbie but I guess I’ve grown up because I was super excited to find these lovely pillow shams wrapped up for me!

IMG_1628

When I moved into my studio, my parents sportingly agreed to trade my twin bed for the spare room’s queen. With the queen came all white bedding, courtesy of my Aunt Madonna. Now, I have lovely pops of color from my mother!

I love the combination of coral and gold. Very {Cottage Glam}, no?

Coral and Gold

The pillow shams are gold and coral, which work beautifully with my green, light blue and taupe color palette. My mother found the {pillow shams} and then we paid {Jo Ann Fabrics} a visit for pillows. Thanks to my mother’s teacher’s card, we were able to snag 3 pillows for a terrific price!

I think I will eventually add a couple of other pillows into the mix…Which do you recommend? Obviously, a monogram takes top priority :)
